By industry
Insurance for manufacturing companies.
Machinery, buildings and a stopped production line — plus liability for the product once it is in the customer’s hands.
In manufacturing, the most expensive loss is rarely the damage itself. It is the standstill: orders that go unfulfilled and customers who leave. Product liability and environmental risk come after that — sometimes years later.
Risks
What usually matters.
PropertyBuildings, machinery and materials at reinstatement value — including machinery breakdown and power surge.
Business interruptionLost gross profit after a fire or breakdown — with an indemnity period long enough to cover delivery of a new machine.
Product liabilityHarm caused by a defective product, product recall and exports — especially to the US and Canada.
Environmental liabilityLeaks of chemicals, fuel or waste water — clean-up costs under the Environmental Liability Act.
Workplace accidentWorkplace accident cover and the employer’s liability under art. 200 of the Labour Code for accidents on the shop floor.
Trade creditDeferred payment from distributors and retail chains — limits per buyer.
Where the gaps usually are
Not in the policy you don’t have, but in the terms of the one you already do.
- The sum insured is based on book value, not reinstatement value — so underinsurance applies when there is a claim.
- The business interruption indemnity period is 3–6 months, while delivery of a specialised machine takes longer.
- Product liability does not cover exports or product recall.
- There is no cover for gradual pollution.

Questions and answers
What is “reinstatement value”?
The amount needed to buy or build new property of the same kind and capacity at the time of the loss. If the policy is based on book value, the claim payment is reduced proportionally.
Does the property policy cover a production stoppage?
Not automatically. Lost profit is covered by separate business interruption insurance, linked to the property policy.
Do we need product liability if we only sell to businesses?
Yes — the harm may occur at the end consumer, and the claim can travel up the supply chain to the manufacturer. For exports, customers often require it by contract.
